Government resources
Department of Veterans Affairs provides loans and grants to adapt homes of disabled veterans to make them accessible or to help them purchase accessible homes. Click on the link to “Specially Adapted Housing.”
Department of Housing and Urban Development 203(k) Rehab Program provides a mortgage insurance program that helps homeowners rehabilitate properties and helps low income individuals purchase homes and rehabilitate them. Eligible improvements include modifications for accessibility.
DisabilityInfo.gov is a comprehensive web source that provides access to all of the federal government’s disability-related information and resources.
State and Local Government on the Net provides access to the websites of thousands of state agencies and city and county governments.
Non-government resources
AbleData is a comprehensive, federally-funded project that provides information on assistive technology and rehabilitative equipment sources worldwide. You can find fact sheets and consumer guides through the website or by mail.
Adaptive Environments Center, Inc. provides consultation, workshops, courses, conferences and other materials on accessible and adaptable design. It also offers publications through the website and by mail, including A Consumer’s Guide to Home Adaptation.
Center for Universal Design is a national research, information and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops and promotes universal design in housing, public and commercial facilities and related products. It also provides information on fair housing practices and home modifications.
Homes for Our Troops, Inc. assists with building materials, labor and coordinating the process of building a new home or adapting an existing one for handicapped accessibility at little or no cost to the veteran.
National Resource Center on Supportive Housing and Home Modification offers helpful advice and links, including state-by-state information.
Salute America’s Heroes provides financial assistance for wheelchair-bound or blind veterans to purchase homes that will accommodate their disabilities.
